A Montgomery County online auction service is helping municipalities across the country generate cash by marketing their surplus equipment.
KYW’s Brad Segall reports Municibid.com was the brainchild of former Pottstown Councilman Greg Berry. Berry said the sealed bid process of selling surplus was outdated and didn’t provide government agencies with a way to maximize their profits.
Berry said his online auction service takes the sale of old police cars, street sweepers, and other vehicles and equipment to another level:
“One, to increase the exposure of the items to actually let people know the stuff is for sale. And then two, bring in bidders that compete back and forth against each other, which drives the price of the item much higher.”
Pottstown recently sold ten items with the company bringing in about $20,000. Berry said that’s more than double what the borough would have made using sealed bid.
There’s no cost to the municipalities. The company makes money by charging the winning bidder a premium.
